Organizing That Most Daunting of Outdoor Spaces: The Garage

Posted by The Tom and Joanne Team on June 24, 2015

Thanks to our guest blogger, Dawn Link, of Resolutions. Dawn is a Certified Professional Organizer®, who works with clients, helping them organize and prepare their homes for the market as well as settling and getting organized into their new homes in the Concord, Lexington, Arlington, and Weston areas.

We are finally able to spend time outdoors without having to worry about bundling up in layers.

Why not create an organized space in your garage for your gardening, sports activities, and tools? It is worth it to dedicate a block of time now so you can rest on your laurels and know you will be able to find what you need when you need it.

Consider your priority for the garage. Is it finally parking your car in the garage or having a workbench area to do your projects? If you are an avid gardener, maybe you desire a space there to finally have all your gardening items accessible. Keep your particular priorities in mind as you proceed.

Having decided, now use your calendar to block out a day to tackle the majority of the sorting and cleaning. Do you also want to take time to paint the walls or re-stain the concrete floor?

As you take every item out of the garage, sort like with like so you know what you have to organize. Keep, for example, all your tools, gardening paraphernalia, decorations, sports equipment, and lawn items together. Also create distinct areas for trash, donations, recycling, and items that need to be returned. Thoughtfully analyze each item you touch to eliminate duplicates or broken items.

You then need to create dedicated zones for each of the sections in your garage. Now that you know what you are keeping, you will have a better idea of the space needed.  Do remember to keep in mind your priorities for the garage when mapping out those zones before lugging everything back inside!

Next decide what you need to either repurpose or to buy to help you keep the zones organized. It may mean buying shelving, bins, pegboard, or hooks to take advantage of vertical and overhead space. Here is where you get to be creative.

As you put items in bins or closed containers, label, label, label!  This simple act will not only make it easier to find what you need but will also have established “homes” for the items to be returned to.

On a final note, if you organize your garage now, it will make for a more relaxed, even more well deserved summer of enjoying yourself.
